Research: What the data actually says about phone calls and service businesses

This section collects the verifiable statistics behind claims Bello makes about missed calls, lead response time, and call-driven revenue — with the original source, what it measured, and its limits stated for every number.

Why this page exists

Marketing pages about missed calls and answering services routinely cite statistics that are exaggerated, misattributed, or untraceable — a $126,000-per-year 'cost of missed calls' with no source, or an '8x' conversion figure attributed to the wrong study. We wrote this section to do the opposite: state only numbers we can trace to a named publisher, quote what that publisher actually measured, and say plainly when we can't verify something.

Bello has not published its own research or customer benchmarks. Everything in this section is drawn from third-party studies and industry reports, cited individually. Where a number is commonly misquoted (for example, the frequent misattribution of the 62% missed-call figure to Harvard Business Review, when it comes from a 411 Locals study), we say so directly.

How we select and caveat claims

A statistic is used on these pages only if we can locate the original publisher, read what was actually measured (not just a secondhand summary), and state the sample size, date, and industry scope. Each page includes a Sources block listing the exact claim, the publisher, a direct link, and the context needed to judge how far the number generalizes.

Two studies get cited constantly in this space and are frequently garbled: the 411 Locals study on unanswered small-business calls, and the MIT/Kellogg 'Lead Response Management' research later summarized in Harvard Business Review's 2011 article 'The Short Life of Online Sales Leads.' The HBR article is about response time to web form leads — not phone calls — and we're explicit about that distinction wherever we reference it.

Frequently asked questions

Does Bello have its own research or customer data?

Not yet. Bello is a newer product and has not published proprietary studies or aggregate customer benchmarks. The statistics on these pages come from independent third-party research, cited individually.

Why do these pages disagree with numbers I've seen elsewhere?

Many widely repeated statistics in this space (a fixed dollar cost of missed calls, an unattributed '8x more likely to close') can't be traced to a primary source. We exclude those and note where common claims are unverifiable or commonly misattributed.

Can I reuse these statistics?

Yes, but check the original source and date before using any figure. Studies age, sample sizes vary, and a number that was accurate in 2011 or 2020 may not describe current conditions.
